I like Metronomy. It's taken me a while to wake up to this fact, having never actually listened to one of their albums, even though they've been putting them out on a regular basis since 2006. They have a solid but functional name and a similar solid and functional name but they don't immediately stand out from the pack even though they've had their fair share of commercial success given the waters that they swim in.
Those waters are quirky, indie ones. Emotive but unpretentious ones founded on rinky dink electronic pulse and comforting melody. This years album, Small World, recently released, is as good a place to start as any. It immediately finds them working skillfully in the seam they've been mining since the start.
Marc Riley, one of my favourite DJ's, (he has an evening programme for BBC 6 Music), has consistently supported them and I can understand why. He likes things like this, independence, good tunes, which will never really capture the mainstream but are ideal for those who are more interested in the margins than the mainstream anyhow.
Small World will not change your world but it may make it a better place. It doesn't make me want to go back and devour their back catalogue but does make me glad I've taken the time to give them a proper listen at last. They're the second band from Totnes, Devon that I've posted as Song of the Day on here in a handful of days, after Pale Blue Eyes on Thursday. Both bands make Totnes sound as if it must be a rather nice place to be.
