Song(s) of the Day # # 2,960 Modern Studies

Scots, Modern Studies are an odd band. Firstly, calling themselves Modern Studies and expecting the general public to listen to their product and go to see them play. You might as well go down to your local  stationers and name your band after the things that you see there; The Pencil Sharpeners, Sellotape. I know, I know, there are probably bands out there operating under these names already.

Then there's the music itself. It's a tasteful modern folk thing that is so tasteful that it actually tales on an almost comic hue. Like much of the music in Inside Llewyn Davis one of my favourite music films of all which pastiches this instinct in the early Greenwich Village Folk scene of musicians to sell out essential principles in order to get ahead and make a buck.

There's nothing wrong with Modern Studies' music. New album We Are There is a mighty pleasant easy listening experience. It just feels implicitly compromised with commercial and critical objectives in mind rather than purely being an artistic venture. Nevertheless, despite all of this it's definitely worth a listen.
