Another fine year. For me in music and in life. The year I left Secondary School and one where the UK Singles charts were as interesting as the Albums one in that many great leftfield bands entered the mainstream charts and had genuine hit records on their own terms. Here is the Top Ten rundown from the Best Ever Albums chart:
- Michael Jackson - Thriller
- Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
- Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
- Kate Bush - The Dreaming
- The Cure - Pornography
- Prince - 1999
- Roxy Music - Avalon
- Duran Duran - Rio
- Donald Fagen - Nightfly
- Dire Straits - Love Over Gold
And here's mine from records I own:
2. The Associates - Sulk
3. Kate Bush - The Dreaming
4. Dexys Midnight Runners - Too Rye Aye
5. The Dream Syndicate - The Days of Wine & Roses
6. ABC - The Lexicon of Love
7. Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
8. Orange Juice - You Can't Hide Your Love Forever
9. Madness - The Rise & Fall
10. Yazoo - Upstairs at Eric's
11. The Clash - Combat Rock
12. Kid Creole & The Coconuts - Tropical Gangsters
13. Scritti Politti - Songs To Remember
14. Marvin Gaye - Midnight Love
15. China Crisis - Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms Some People Think It's Fun to Entertain
16. XTC - English Settlement
17. Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Imperial Bedroom
18. Roxy Music - Avalon
19. Blancmange - Happy Families
20. Laurie Anderson - Big Science
21. Grace Jones - Living my Life
22. Steel Pulse - True Democracy
23. Mission of Burma - Vs
24. Thomas Dolby - The Golden Age of Wireless
25. Psychedelic Furs - Forever Now
Not a bad soundtrack to a fundamental year in my life.
