First 'new' album of 2021 that's really taken my fancy. In some respects it's not stictly 'new' considering that it's another barely reconstructed Old School Soul record of the sort that have become so prevalent in the last twenty years or so. Nothing wrong with that to my ears and here's another to add to that pile.
Aaron Frazer is hardly a new voice either. He has a long history of association with product of this quality as drummer and co-vocalist of Durand Jones & The Indications. But his debut album, just out, is entitled Introducing..., and clearly asking to be assessed on its own terms.
Those terms are sweet, and fresh as the new year. Immaculately produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. Offering twelve slabs of hip and cool heartfelts emotion and stylings that draw in equal measures from Delfonics, Philly and Doo Wop. All the while Frazer's voice sails effortlessly across the mix. Nice!
