While waiting for 2020 to kick into gear in terms of new music, there's plenty still in 2019's tank in terms of quality stuff I didn't feature here last year. Like this for example, Sap Season, the second album from Athens, Ohio's Wished Bone.
This is a languid, loose-limbed, gentle beast. Angular Folk, if such a description makes sense, with the occasional burst of Velvets dissonance to keep things lively. Ashley Rhodus, for she it appears, is Wished Bone, has an assured loping, singing and playing style. The record seems to be performed as if in the midpoint between sleep and wakefulness, and subsequently might make good listening matter for when you choose to retire to bed.
It's a consistent, easy, enjoyable album, remarkably good company. To the best of my knowledge Wished Bone haven't as of yet benefited from an enormous amount of mainstream favour. This is a shame because this is a highly accessible record and Rhodus is a notable talent. One to slot alongside Tiny Ruins, Hand Habits, Shana Cleveland and Tomberlin in the up and coming file.
Yes. I was listening again in the car this morning. I didn't find it as immediate as the first album, but it has really grown on me. I love her songwriting.
ReplyDeleteDon't know the first record. Will have to give it a listen. Liked this one a lot!
