Song(s) of the Day # 1,389 Rips


Brooklyn band Rips first album, also called Rips, rings rather than rips. It rings most of all like Marquee Moon, Television's still unmatched 1977 debut. There's almost nothing whatsoever remotely original about the record but if you like twin guitars that clash and chime, punky attitude and amped up energy and melody, you might care to give this a listen.


What doesn't sound like Tom Verlaine's boys sounds very much like the Parquet Courts, appropriately enough as that band's Austin Brown produced the record. So while I can't altogether commend the apish tendencies of the record, I do admire its melodies. Rip off or ripping? You decide. I kind of like it...
