January 1st 1953 Hank Williams

More doom and gloom. I promise to stop after this. But it seems the only really note-worthy Rock and Roll event from January 1st is the anniversary of the death of Hank. Here's Nik Cohn from Rock Dreams.

'Within Hank Williams, two beings coexisted, intertwined but incompatible. The first wore rodeo spangles, picked-guitars and yodelled, in the classic image of the Country'n'Western cowpoke; the second was Southern white trash - depression raised and underfed, restless, insecure, eternally mistrustful. As one Hank became star of the Grand Ole Opry, unchallenged King of Country; but as the other, he lived on highways and in motels, and cafeterias, got drunk, wrecked his marriage, never stopped travelling and very soon died, of heart failure and too many pills, in the back of an automobile.'
