I confess I like the review better than the record. But it has a few moments.
These are days I get the impression that an opinion is required .About everything. I could be wrong . , Perhaps it has always been this way, perhaps it's my age. Why does everyone have to have an opinion. Why does everyone have to offer them however facile they might be. I'm not exempting myself. Really I'm not.
In the words of Don Draper ' the universe is indifferent.' About everything. My own inclination is to step back and withdraw. From as much as I can. Not quite yet to curl into a foetal ball, that might be called for at some point.
But I'm game. When pressed I do have opinions. I write a blog so I'm giving Moisturizer the second album by Isle of Wight chancers and media sensations Wet Leg a play on Saturday afternoon instead of scouring my oven rings. Only problem is I'm two tracks in and I already feel like a deserve a medal. A purple heart perhaps. Or something wuth Saint George on it.
I am not Wet Legs constituency. Obviously. Or even really on their planet. Hey I like the Velvet Underground and Dostoevsky. They might feature on a Wet Leg lyric, it wouldn't surprise me. but being in a Wer Leg lyric has not as yet been enough to start me drooling. I'm a fan of Buffalo 66 too but I try not to namedrop it purely for effect. To get a cheap laugh and radio play. Don't worry I've been called a snob before. I'm getting used to it,
Anyway never fear for Moisturizer is picking up a lot. After the ghastly Mines of Mordor chasm of tracks one and two. Tracks three and four are vastly preferable and it feels we're heading up the grassy Alpine slope and Julie and the Von Trapp darlings are about to burst into the Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music. Well, they're much better than tracks one and two. Let's leave it at that.
Maybe we might have a happy ending. Despite the front cover of Moisturizer where you certainly don't get that impression at all. Quite the opposite Pop Pickers. On the photo on the sleeve. one of Wet Leg is bearing her fangs at the camera lens like a petrified hyena while the other has her back to us and seems to be giving herself a snog for some unearthly reasin known only to herself. Vanity? What is going on? No, I don't understand kids these days. Should I.
Anyway they're going on about' Catching a Medicine Ball' in Catch These Fists which I reckon is what they call in the trade A Disco Banger !!!! Yes you heard me. Don't call me Grandad ! I'll bet this is on a playlist.Loads of playlists. I bet kids are getting their first kisses to it somewhere as we speak. Now there's a nice thought. Certainly a lot nicer than this Wet Leg record. .
I smell dollars! These girls don't want your love, they want a fight. 'I just wanna dance with my friends', Hey, it's the Zeitgeist ! Is this girlpower?. I dunno. I realise this song is a huge goer. It's immediately obvious. I have ears. That said I don't really want to hear it ever again but I suspect your only alternatuve to doing so on repeat is just to stay in for six months and listen to Mahler.
Oh dear now they're going on about 'Fucking Their Pillows'. . Do their mothers listen to this. Have I become my parents. It's Wet Leg's fault ! It's hardly the Bed's Too Big Without You though I thought that was a bit risque when I was 15. Anyway it seems that this was mostly written for Wet Leg's next Glastonbury Performance and I imagine that should rip the univese another one but I'll probably turn over when they're on. ..
This should sell like the proverbial hot cakes and I imagine feature highly pn end of year lists but I'm off tomorrow on It Starts looking for more bands from Idaho that sound a bit like Pavement, That's mostly what I trade in here. I just wrote a text message to an old friend who's even more cynical than I am. I signed off with the comment, ' Why don't they try to do something good. Like The Byrds.' Hey I did like four tracks. But mostly this isn't for me at all. It strikes me as rather cynical. I don't see any reason why the young need be cynical. Isn't it a better idea to be happy?
P.S. Penultumate track 11:21 is very good indeed. Poignant and sad. Moving, The best thing on here. Maybe album three will be when they decide to move of in their new Byrds durectuin. Now that would be interesting. .
