I'm always inclined to like records by bands whose name is prefaced with Gold, Golden or Silver. They're three of my favourite words and things and I've been inclined towards bands with similar instincts since I was entranced at 16 by the purchase of Simple Minds New Gold Dream.
So to Golden Apples. As in Golden Apples of the Sun the Ray Bradbury novel. Or the Judy Collins album. Or the Yeats poem. Take your pick. Whichever way you look at it this is a great name for a band.
Golden Apples are from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. And Bannanasugarfire is the name of the record. They're a few down the line What's immediately sure from the opening moments of the record is that they have indeed struck gold here.
The record is buildt on the simplest of premises. The sound of guitars. Simply strummed but with artistic intent. Think Wire, The Feelies, Yo La Tengo, Flying Nun.
The band have an interesting sound and great taste. And Bannanasugarfire is a lovely album which I've neglected unfairly since first mate Darren Jones recommended it to me several weeks ago. Better late than never. Splendid.
Ah, had forgotten i had recommended it until I read the last paragraph! It's another good one. The last few albums have been great, but it's a proper band now, rather than a one-man bedroom outfit. Great stuff!
ReplyDeleteReally terrific album that one Darren.
