Vanishing Twin - Afternoon X

The fourth Vanishing Twin album Afternoon X, appeared out of nowhere on my feed, a few days ago, with little or no advanced fanfare to my knowledge. I've been listening to it virtually ever since.

Vanishing Twin are a London based multiglot combo, that take their name from a miscarriage procedure that causes twins to mutate into a single baby. Their three album journey since 2019's The Age of Immunology is one of the most interesting musical treks of recent years that I'm aware of.

They're definitely a little bit Stereolab. A little bit Broadcast and Pram. Quite a lot of forward thinking bands and artists seem to be these days, as the futures these pioneering groups mapped out in the Nineties are increasingly realised.

But, Vanishing Twin are becoming increasingly themselves with every step they take. Afternoon X is a fascinating record in every respect. Like a long sought after classic Sci Fi Dystopian paperback, discovered in a book shop one wet Autumnal afternoon, and devoured over the coming days at a single sitting.

A little bit Stereolab. A little bit Jane Weaver. A little bit Krautrock. A little bit Robert A. Heinlein and Ursula Le Guin. A feast. I can't stop playing it,

  1. Keep meaning to thank you for the reminder about this! Popped up in my Spotify release radar, but hadn't got around to it. Same with the Islet album that I need to get onto! You might also like the new Sagittaire album that came out on Friday, which is a sort of trip hoppish/electro concept album about the affair between Lucian Freud and Lady Caroline Blackwood. I rather like it!
