Song(s) of the Day # 3,527 The Drums

The Drums seem to be the ultimate Indie one rush sensation. That song Let's Go Surfing, from ten or more years back, that caught the hearts and souls of planners and pluggers for the drive time slots of vaguely adventurous radio stations the world over.

They played it to death. Then and ever since. The Drums latest record Jonny, is a record with a black and white photo of a young man standing naked in his living roam and pointing his pert bottom at the camera lens for reasons only he can explain.

I'm not entirely sure what statement this sleeve is attempting to make. The guy is leaning over one of those common as mud office swing chairs for goodness sake. It's all a bit naff. Hardly a 'Hand in Glove.' moment.

The actual record itself suffers from a similar quandry. It wants to be timeless but lacks the cojones. So it's listless, wet generic Indie instead. Wishing it was a classic early set of obscure New Order B Sides but without the vision. Or the ideas. Or the grit.  Or the musicians. Or the tunes. I'd give this three. It's dreadful I'm off to listen to the new Allah Las record instead.
