Song(s) of the Day # 3,483 Green Gardens

'No one's writing fables anymore.' A Cradling, Green Gardens

Given that we're all 65 years plus down the line as far as this kind of thing is concerned, we're pretty much fully stretched when it comes to describing stuff.in any vaguely new and original way. Leeds' Green Gardens latest This Is Not Your Fault, their first it seems, was described, apparently with the band's approval as Feudal Soft Rock on their Spotify bio.

When I Googled Feudal Soft Rock in an attempt to discover more, it seems that Green Gardens are entirely in a field of their own on this one. Anyhow, their sound is a beguiling one, so much so, that it might not be long until others follow their lead.

So what do we get? Guitars that are slowed down to a steady pace. Guitars interlapping and chiming, voices harmonising soothingly over that. Not Indie really. More in the Folk tradition  Hardly Hey Master Tambourine Man but probably somewhere on the Byrds family tree nevertheless.

A record and band that deliberately shrouds itself in mystique by telling you next to nothing about itself in its press releases, much the same as R.E.M.'s Murmur did back in 1983, ushering in something new and pointing me in the direction of adulthood. Like that record, this doesn't come with a lyric sheet. Investment will be required from the listener to colour in the detail.

I'll be more than happy to. It's an altogether beautiful record to set forth on the weekend with. Green Gardens give you every impression that they've seen the whole of the moon. This is a great way to start their journey and the reason why I continue to write and relish writing this blog.. For the ongoing sense of discovery.
