Get U're Freak On! Lil Yachty. A name I was aware of but a record I haven't listened to thus far this year t'il a Rough Trade Albums of the year for the mid-way point of 2023 pushed me in this direction.
To be precise Let's Start Here the Lil one's fifth and current record. It sounds like a record made on helium.. I'm immediately reminded of the vocoder, that weird vocal transformer that was actually invented by Homer Dudley in 1938, But it first came to my attention when the likes of Kraftwerk, Jean Michelle Jarre, Stevie Wonder, ELO and Herbie Hancock began to cook up musical applications for it in the late Seventies.
Let's Start Here is a weird, funky, and genuinely freaky record. I haven't heard that much Hip Hop that's really rang my bell for a while now.. Too many would be gangsters brandishing artillery and boasting at length rather than pushing the boundaries, which has been my main issue with so much of the genre for a good 25 years now.
This is a different trip though. It's Alice down the rabbit hole if Alice were black, with an afro and shades and the rabbit hole was in the hood rather than the English countryside. A stunning record that it may take me a few more plays to process fully. I recommend it in the meantime.
