Indie Pop Confectionary..It's been around for a few decades now and it's never been my favourite thing. Lightning Seeds. Dubstar, Saint Etienne, even Pet Shop Boys at a push. I've liked plenty of it down the years. Actively loved plenty. But it's never been quite my favourite thing.
Frankie Rose's new album Love As Projection is a record that the term Indie Pop Confectionary, fits to a T. It's sugary electopop. Saccharine enough to make you fear for the survival of your cavities. It made me think of Pet Shop Boys, Lightning Seeds and New Order with a female vocalist at points and given the credentials of these people, that can never be a completely be a bad thing.
It's a slightly surprising record given that Rose was previously in Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls and Vivian Girls. There's not an ounce of The Velvet Underground here for example. Nor a hint of Punk Rock. That's not to say she's sold out. What does that even mean these days. It's a very good record. Just slightly sweet for my own personal taste.
