Song(s) of the Day # 3,277 Dave Rowntree

The Drummer's Tale. An interesting case study. If you'd have asked do we really need a record from Dave Rowntree, the drummer of Blur at this point in time, the answer would surely be, 'well not really'.

But wait, that record, in the shape of debut Radio Songs is here, and is certainly worth a listen. It's a good record to put out in January and might get a fair share of attention and play rather than getting stampeded as it might be at a busier moment in the calendar.

It's a meditative, reflective record as you might expect from someone at Rowntree's stage of life. The songs are full of space and time and thought. Strangely he comes across as almost the Indie Phil Collins. After all, he was a drummer too. Phil Collins, after he'd discovered Japan. Or the first Julian Cope record.

When it finished, I put Radio Songs on again. It was a rather wonderful record to spend the early hours of a Friday morning with as the sun rose slowly. Some of the tracks here sounded slightly like unresolved sketches. But in general I'd give this one almighty tick.
