In some ways 1983 was something of a transitional year in British Pop Music. You had big hits from the likes of Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Wham! that seemed rather Thatcherite in tone. Associates and ABC were in retreat and Howard Jones and Nik Kershaw were on the horizon. And you had Carmel. A genuinely rootsy and soulful singer with a genuinely rootsy and soulful band. The kind of thing that got Jools Holland in a cold sweat and made London types in DMs, Levis and black polo necked sweaters almost lose their cool. Sade was clearly on her way too. Bad Day was fine stuff and reached the lower reaches of the UK Singles charts.
