Great Albums I've Missed During 2022 Part Blah, Blah, Blah. Leyla McCalla's latest. Breaking The Thermometer. explores the fascinating narrative of the creole language Radio Haiti and how it intersected with the story of that deeply troubled country.
As much educative as entertaining the record is an absorbing document, weaving together ads from the time, personal narratives of the brutality of the Papa and Baby Doc regimes and wonderful tunes that swing with defiance and reverence for the dead.
The product of a commission from the Duke University in North Carolina, Breaking The Thermometer is best ingested at a single sitting. Fabulous stuff.
