A cursory listen to Wish I Could See You, by Cheap Star from earlier this year makes you wonder whether it's quite self consciously a concept. That their name is an amalgam of possibly the two greatest Power Poppers of the Seventies, Cheap Trick and Big Star and that this is pretty much a love letter to all that is so great about that generic form.
That inkling only heightens the longer that the record spins. The other great associations I made were with Teenage Fanclub and Out of Time era R.E.M. both of which carried a considerable torch for all that stuff.
The litmus test for whether such utterly devotional purpose is whether the songs are up to scratch and they very much are here. I imagine if you like the place this comes from. You'll like his too
