Song(s) of the Day # 3,051 The Funkees

Yet another argument for keeping your ear close to the ground for great re-releases from the past. More Funky happenings from Afrcia's Seventies. This time appropraiately from the actual Funkees.

The records all these songs come from is  Dancing Time: The Best Of Eastern Nigerian Afro Rock Exponents 1973-1977. It's a complilation from 2012, but I've just discovered it right now, so I'm going to release it as if it's a new release. Because it certainly sounds fresh.

The Funkees were a Nigerian band, formed in the late Sixties that could probably be labelled, not entirely innacurrately Afrobeat. They moved to London in 1973 and did pretty well there as a gigging band on the scene before disbanding four years later.

Soundways released this compilation of their recording ten years back. It's so of it's time. Fela of course casts his huge shadow but the band know their chops. A record that positively bounces.
