Song(s) of the Day # 3,050 Gretel Hanlyn

The latest in the line of driven, autodidact young female talents that London has been in the habit of throwing up for the last twenty years or so. Fifty if you include the Punk urchin girls; Siouxsie, Poly Styrene, Ari Up, Viv Albertine and Jordon.

On to Lily, Amy, Arlo, Nilufer and Gretel Hanlyn. Hanlyn, (a pseudonym, Punk reinvention is clearly not dead),fairly recently released a debut album Slugeye, if seven short songs qualifies as such, that certainly press her case as one to watch.

Hanlyn, (real name Maddy Heinlein), isn't lacking in attitude or ambition. Each song on Slugeye just exudes it. Hailing from Acton, West London, her music pulses with the vague frustration of not really being at the heart of things but being determined to be.

Most immediately reminiscent of Nilufer Yanyer, Slugeye is ultimately too short and not striking enough to really make Hanlyn's case fully. It's a strangely estranged and taking record though and she's one to watch.
