Ths is good, Not from now. Unfotrtunately I'm three years behind the times and stumbled across it thanks to a Horsegirl playlist and a Pitchfork review which the Internet helped me onto from there. To be honest it's the kind of music that if it didn't exist Pitchfork would have to invent and claim it had discovered on its own.
It's a record from a Chinese based duo called Gong Gong Gong called Phantom Ryhthm. Bo Diddley was always pretty good. The Velvet Undergound knew that. The Cramps knew that. So did The Jesus & Mary Chain. White Stripes too. Gong Gong Gong clearly too. Put on a huge triibal beat and you'll soon turn heads. Get folk out in the crowd excited and feel like they acually might get to meet Fred Flinstone any moment. What more could anyone want?
Layer angry sounding Chinese vocals on top and you might think you've struck a goldmine. A gestalt. Can. Suicide, Neu, Stooges,The Velvet Underground and all those cool JapRock bands that you claim you know back to front when you really don't know them at all and you've really hit daydirt. Put your shades on. Wander into the dark and see what happens. The coolest sound. The greatest scene. And you're at the heart of it. It's in your head.
This is good, In fact it's really, really good. Unfortunately it's happening on the other side of the world. In Beijing, China. A couple of years ago. Gong Gong Gong. Going, going gone. Get it on. Bang a gong.
