Another month, another Guided By Voices album with a singularly cryptic Guided By Voices album title. With their trademark sound; a little bit of Bob Mould, a little bit of Document period R.E.M. some Wire, some Who, some Prog, (lots of Gabriel Genesis on this one), and plenty of Robert Pollard and Guided By Voices.
They're a band that puts pretty much every other band on earth to shame now. except perhaps for King Lizzard. Certainly in terms of the prolific nature of their output. Also strangely in terms of the quality control of these releases. This is another good one.
Crystal Nuns Cathedral, and I'm not even going to bother calculating which album it is, in terms of its actual numbering within their recorded catalogue, is Guided by Voices doing what they've been doing since the Eighties. Singular, independent angular, committed, guitar based Rock and Roll.
In general the velocity on this one is toned down. Never fear, they'll surely be back, a few months down with another which is more amped up than this one. Guided By Voices, one of the few things that remain constant in these turbulent times.
