One of the best things you can possibly be in my book is influenced by the later Velvet Underground and the early Modern Lovers. Those two versions of these bands tapped in to a gold mine that is still productive over fifty years later. The Bug Club seem entirely alive to the possibilties that these ealier bands opened up for Rock and Roll.
I chanced upon The Bug Club by turning on my radio at exactly the right moment a couple of days later. Now I've caught up with their debut album Pure Particles from earlier on this year. It's an inessential release except for those for whom these things are essential.
These things being the later Velvet Underground and the early Modern Lovers. Vic Godard, The Violent Femmes and the music taste of Marc Riley. I certainly count myself among that number.
It's a quirky and rather delightful album. Fans of Holiday Ghosts who also mainline into this particular Rock and Roll vein might also like to explore. There also seems to be a song devoted to Modern Lovers leader the wondrous Jonathan Richman called Jonathan's Gone. Fortunately that's not actually the case but when that day comes it will be a very sad one indeed. At least his spirit will live on as Pure Particles testifies.
Is it the weekend yet? I need the weekend. I'll certainly give this one another spin.
