Catalan Joanna Serrat's fifth album Hardcore From The Heart is a smooth, comfortable, seductive ride. Mojo's description of Serrat as 'Mazzy Star guesting on an early Neil Young demo,' is apt. There's definitely the trace of Shoegaze influences here, but first and foremost this is fine songwriting and a splendidly crafted record.
Written around a basic concept, the distance between idealised and lived reality, Hardcore From The Heart, has had all the edges smoothed way. Deftly produced by Ted Young, (Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth), easy listening for those of the Indie set who have an occasional penchant for Nicks / Buckingham era Fleetwood Mac.
