Song(s) of the Day # 2,644 The Pink Stones

Athens Georgia's Pink Stones are not essential, but they are diverting. A loose and laidback C&W bar band in the tradition of Beechwood Sparks and The Tyde, that does bubblegum Gram as if they were born in the saddle. Their debut album Introducing The Pink Stone twangs and chimes amiably 'til the cows come home and lope into their paddocks.

A band that make Teenage Fanclub come across as over eager, the Stones barely break stride over the course of the record. A little urgency wouldn't have gone amiss on occasion. This might be one you choose to save for the last one for the road in your favourite bar some evening as the other punters hit the road for home while the barman, an old friend, lets you drain your glass at your own speed.

The record offers few surprises once it's laid out its wares on the opening track. My attention was wandering slightly I must confess a few songs in. At which point they broke into a Flying Burritos canter for Barroom Blues. After which I rather nodded off at the bar and they proceeded to slow the pace down again. Not vital as I said, but certainly rather likeable.
