Damon Locks and The Black Music Ensemble return less than two years after the remarkable Where Music Unfolds, with another storming record, entitled NOW. All snaky rhythms, chopped up spoken samples and jittery beats, this really does feel like music of now, given the agitation and rage of recent years.
This is celebratory but also defiant and resilient stuff. Feeling to some degree like a political demonstration with the coolest set of people, it doesn't particularly do anything remarkably different from Where Music Unfolds though it may have slightly different points of focus, but it's just great to have it at all given the straightjacket of Covid.
