The second memory in a row partially inspired by my good friend Philip, who came along at just the right time late into my secondary school days. Walking there one morning, (the buses must have been off for some reason), across the utterly beautiful Petersham Meadows. Philip said at a certain point. 'Where do we go from here? Is it down to the lake I fear.' A deeply stupid quote from an equally stupid Haircut 100 song that was riding high in the charts at that point in time. The moment has stayed with me forever for some reason.
Haircut 100 were not a particularly good thing. They scooped up everything that Orange Juice might have but didn't achieve chart wise, just as Duran Duran took what Japan gave them and did the same. As Alex Petridis wrote sagely about the former: ' the Smash Hits audience opted instead for Haircut 100 and their David Cassidy version of Orange Juice's sound: all of the tweeness, none of the intelligence or grit.'
