So it's a new year which seems like a good time for a new series. I need little excuse. But in the meantime, here's the continuation of one of the longest ones on here. Minneapolis's Real Numbers sound nothing like a Minneapolis band. There's not the merest shred of a trace of Husker Du, The Replacements or Prince in their sound. Instead, they're purest C-86, immersed in that sound of the UK independent, jangly and delicate world of the late eighties. Their album from 2016, Wordless Wonder, plays unashamed homage to that scene, although the playing is sturdy and practiced by comparison with many of those original bands. If you don't like that sound you sure as heck won't go for this one but fortunately thirty years on, I still have a very soft place in my heart for it. A place where we're all eighteen forever! Appropriately, it comes out on Slumberland Records which is very much a living shrine to these sentiments and wordview.
