Scott Fitzgerald's much quoted though probably misinterpreted line about there being no second act in American lives was pleasingly disproved in the case of Arthur Lee. Victim of California's notorious 'three strikes and you're out', legal policy and sentenced to a long prison term in the nineties, Lee seemed destined to end his life in a downward spiral, unfitting given the true odd greatness of so much of his work. Happily, on his release, he actually spent his last few years touring and reaping late appreciation for what he achieved and represented. A visionary.
