I listened to Regina Spektor for the first time a week or so back while sat in front of my computer at work, and was very taken by her most recent album What We Saw From The Cheap Seats from about four years back. A very individual talent who has been consistently given the 'kooky' label and branded with Tori Amos comparisons by lazy music critics over the years. I'd say she's a more specific proposition than that.
All The Rowboats, posted above imagines the dilemma of classic paintings, locked up in the masoleum of the modern gallery, trying to escape their moorings. Other songs describe the atmosphere of life on the vibrant streets of New York City, or the intense comedy of human relationships. Spektor's own classical training consistently take her songs out of the ordinary into the realms of imaginative joy. I'm a bit late on the case here, but look forward very much to whatever she comes up with next.
