Song(s) of the Day # 4,059 Nick Drake

' When I was younger. Younger than before.'

It sometimes feels worthwhile to listen to a piece of music or a musician you haven't listened to for quite a while. So Nick Drake. I listened to Five Leaves Left late last night, I'll listen to Pink Moon now. Maybe Bryter Later at some point later today. I know that's not the general listening order. But it's a free world isn't it? That's a different and thorny subject. For another day.

Pink Moon is an eerie album to start the day with. The sun is rising outside my window, But it's graceful. Straight backed. Like a finger, pointing out at the world.. Fifty years or more on. Sparse melodies. Spartan instrumentation. Wise, poetic lyrics. Voice that seems apart. Removed.

It's a rather sad record. I suppose. But it's our knowledge of what happened next that really defies it as sad.  Knowing what happened to Drake next. When it was released. Not noticed. But mostly I don't find it sad. It's actually wise. And profound. A great artist in the process of becoming.A poet.

Walk in the English countryside. You'll be able to hear Drake's music spinning in your head. It's eternal music. Eternal values and culture. Like the sun going up. The sun going down.Sudden rain on your skin. The realisation that you're alive. And fortunate to be so.  It's something beyond us all, And Drake described this. Listen to Pink Moon It's less than half an hour. Listen to the others. Bless him !
