A great set of songs first and foremost.
Calling yourself Labrador and your debut album Retrievers is hardly the most savvy initial career move. Any mildly curious music fan making a cursory Google search is invariably going to be confronted by a lot of pictures of ... erm labradors and retrievers. And quite possibly just give up at that point.
Still, I perservered and I'm glad I did. Labradors are a Milan based trio and their particular prediliction seems to be the melodic wing of the Grunge contingent, 1992 to 1994. Nirvana, Teenage Fanclub, Urge Overkill, Dinosaur Jr., Foo Fighters. From there they also hark back to some of the bands that inspired these. Badfinger, The Raspberries, Big Star.
This era and sound is clearly their bag, but they avoid toppling over the edge of pastiche for one reason and one reason only. The songs on Retrievers are so damned good. They really capture the soul and feel of the best of this stuff/ As I said the combination of their band name and choice of album titles may not have been the wisest decision but I really love their sound.
