Dana Gavanski is the kind of artist I'm naturally interested in and in her case have missed the opportunity of seeing live in small local venues recently. A quirky, idiosyncratic musician, not disimilar in many respects from Cate Le Bon and Aldous Harding doing her own thing.
Second album When It Comes does ask the important question, 'Is it sufficiently her thing,' or is it too much Aldous and particularly Cate's to maintain sustained interest.
I think the answer this time would probably be, 'Not really?' Reminders of Cate are everywhere and there are plenty of Cate records to listen to, not least her most recent album, the magnificent Pompeii.
There were a couple of tracks I really took to and the record certainly improves the longer it plays. I particularly like the autumnal and rather gorgeous Under The Sky.
There's more to enjoy here and Gavanski is certainly one to watch. I'm sure she's got better records within her and ones that are more entirely her own coming up the pike in future years. Ib the meantime there's certainly plenty to relish here too.
