Having been entranced by Kit Sebastian's 2019 record Mantra Moderne in 2019, I was delighted to find another album from them, Melodi coming up the pike on Friday. That record is not surprisingly in the same mode as Mantra Moderne, an Exotica tinged exercise in kitsch nostalgia, like some kind of Turkish dance version of Broadcast.
Easy and self-consciously hip, Melodi is a great act of oneupmanship to play for your friends, next time you invite them round for tea. There's no reinvention on the part of Kit Sebastian because Mantra Moderne provided the basis for a long and productive career.
Sounding like an unbearably cool OST for Cult Sixties or Seventies movies, Melodi takes its place in the queue behind Teke;Teke, El Michels Affair and Saint Etienne as one of the best imaginary soundtracks for 2021.
