A late contender for old school Indie album of the year, though it's too late in the day for me as Wurld Series, The Umbrellas, The Telephone Numbers, Holiday Ghosts, Kiw Jr., Golden Apples, Black Twigs, Good Sax and Cool Ghouls have already sealed off my own personal shortlist in that respect for 2021.
Regardless, Ducks Ltd. first album, Modern Fiction has plenty of old fashioned, independent trebly thrills on show. Any record that reminds me of Close Lobsters, Orange Juice, Buzzcocks, The Go Betweens, early Soup Dragons, Wedding Present and Primal Scream,The Servants, Razorcuts, Flying Nun and Slumberland Records and the like has to be a good thing.
Ducks Ltd, does all of that and more. Ten jangly, brittle, melodic songs in less than half an hour. Sweet and full of the ebullience and sheer joy of youth A Toronto, Ontario duo who breath fresh life into the memory of dank British indie venues of the mid to late Eighties.
Formerly Ducks Unlimited, I have no idea why they've changed their name and apparently their direction. Never mind, they've come up trumps here. According to their Bandcamp page, they 'explore contemporary society in decline examining large scale disaster through personal turmoil.' Perhaps I should add McCarthy to the list compiled above. I'm pleased to report that they evidently have a wail of time while doing so.
