I said I'd get back to Kathy Kirby, and here I am. Her debut album, Cool Dry Place is a sweet and rather affecting record. Modest in its ambitions. Tender and impressive in terms of its affections.
A bit of background. Kirby is from Texas though you wouldn't really know it. She writes and performs melodic songs of what I imagine you'd call an indie disposition. None of these attempt to blow the house. But they work rather well anyhow. This is a really nice record.
According to her Spotify bio she touches on a number of themes on here; motherhood, late capitalism, disintegrating relationships. You wouldn't particularly know that from listening to them either. The songs are good, the delivery is great. The effect is highly pleasant.
