Song(s) of the Day # 2,541 Brazilian Girls

Around the world in fifty minutes. One to keep up your sleeve for your musical friend or acquaintance who is always hipper than you no matter what you do. Might be worth countering with Brazilian Girls. Hailing of course from the East Village, their 2008 album, appropriately entitled New York City, is as good a place as any to start if you're looking to investigate.

It's eclecticism in excelsis. No track sounds remotely the same as the next or the one that preceded it. Truly global in its scope, the record shifts seamlessly from catwalk, to dancefloor, to movie soundtrack, to Rive Gauche nightclub. The common demoninators being sexiness and rhythm.

A record that males you feel you are experiencing the glorious disorientation of the senses that being in the heart of Manhattan can initiate. To add to the fabulous overload that the record encourages, you can also give yourself a pat on the back with the sheer abiding obscurity of the record, if that's your thing. 814th most popular album of the year it was released according to the readers of Best Ever Albums. It's much much better than that, I'm telling you.

Altogether a joyous and fabulous ride. The band have received a thumbs up and collaborated with David Byrne, just as you'd expect. They've also had a Grammy nomination. But still, twelve years on from New York City,  they remain a relatively open secret to those in the know. Join this selective band behind the velvet rope.
