A proper treat, just in time for the encroaching Autumn. Tomorrow Again, the latest album from Teesider Saint Saviour a record that never quite sits still long enough for you to work out exactly what it is.
It's winsome Indie musings. It's late night leftfield dance moves. It's momentarily angry. Then it's calm again. Most of all it feels like a keeper, a record to listen to again and again until you tease out all of its moods.
There are a number of collaborations here. All right at the start of the record. With Badly Drawn Boy, Will Mason and Bill Ryder-Jones. Nothing particularly stands out because it's all interesting, inventive and sensitively wrought, all draws you in and makes you want to learn more.
Becky Jones, (for Saint Saviour is she), is a smooth and savvy operator. Once a vocalist with Groove Armada and a songwriter for The Young Pope and Seahorse, it's clear she's determined to govern her own path and take her time in order to do so. It's the first album she's put out in this form for six years. I shan't say it's worth the wait. Oops! It just slipped out.
I'm making my way through Tomorrow Again for the third time now and it's working its way into me like only the best records do. In much the same way as Ryder-Jones records do. It makes perfect sense to see them working together.
As mentioned, Autumn's nearly here if it isn't already. This record seems Autumnal in the best senses of that brief and elusive season. The fading light that comes to us just before darkness falls. It's full of warm consolation and excellent tunes.
Accompanied by a set of lovely tailor-made promos for individual songs, (many of which I've posted here), Tomorrow Again seems sure of a Top Ten placing once I come round to making end of year lists come November. Like I said, it's a keeper.
