Missed a day...
To describe Detroit singer-songwriter Ian Ruhala's new album Red Herring, just out, as Power Pop would probably be, err, just that. Power Pop is something of a restrictive term. This is something which set off from the guitar sounds and vocal harmonies of The Beatles, The Byrds, The Beach Boys and The Who after all.
Red Herring is not particularly reminiscent of any of those. It's more Marshall Crenshaw, Beck, Ben Kweller, Keven Morby to my ears. It's definitely distinctly white and rather suburban, and generally keeps chipper and upbeat. It's a good album without ever really threatening to become a great one.
If you like the artists listed in paragraph two you'll like this one. If you've enjoyed records by dbs, and Squeeze there should be plenty to admire. If the record never really lets go and produces anything celestial, ( a # 1 Record moment a High Land, Hard Rain one) it runs on the spot with perfectly admirable restraint and craft.
