One of my great musical finds of recent years has been to discover the magical sound of Lancaster, Pennnsylvia band The Innocence Mission. Built around a husband and wife team of Karen and Don Peris they offer and alternative to rude and clamorous modernity. The still point of a turning world.
Listening to The Innocence Mission is like sitting at a kitchen window and watching a garden return to life today. Their records are daisy chains of the purest enchantment and beauty. Now Karen has put out a solo album, 'A Song is Way Above the Lawn.' To all intents and purposed it might as well be an IM record.
Karen's childlike voice of course is at the heart of the charm and appeal of The Innocence Mission. You can feel the passing of the seasons in its fragile but assured conviction.
A triumphant statement. Peris and IM have arrived upon a formula that is characteristically theirs and utterly winning. A Song is Way Above the Lawn is a transfixed vision and wonder.
